How Security Film Works

Security window film is a heavy-duty polyester laminate — typically 4–14 mil thick — that is professionally adhered directly to the interior surface of your existing glass. Unlike standard decorative film, security film is engineered to hold the glass together when it's struck, rather than allowing it to shatter and scatter.

When a window with security film is struck by force, the glass may crack and fracture — but the film keeps it bound together in the frame. This means an intruder cannot simply punch through or reach in to unlock a door. They must repeatedly attack the window, significantly increasing the time and noise required to gain entry.

Most residential security film installations in Toronto also include optional frame anchoring — a structural sealant that bonds the film to the frame itself, preventing the entire glass pane from being pushed inward.

Honest note: Security film does not make glass bulletproof, unbreakable, or impenetrable. It helps delay forced entry, helps hold glass together, and adds a meaningful protective layer. Combined with other security measures, it significantly raises the difficulty and time required for any forced entry attempt.

  • Helps hold shattered glass together in the frame
  • Delays forced entry — increases attack time from seconds to minutes
  • Reduces risk of injury from flying glass in break-ins, accidents, or storms
  • Virtually invisible — clear film preserves your view and window appearance
  • Blocks up to 99% of UV rays — protects furniture, flooring, and artwork
  • Works on single-pane, double-pane, tempered, and laminated glass
  • No permits required — completed in a single day with no mess
  • 10-year manufacturer warranty on all professional installations

Security Film for GTA Homes

Security film is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect your family from break-ins and glass injuries in your Toronto or GTA home.

Ground floor windows and glass patio doors are the most common entry points for residential break-ins across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and all GTA communities. Most standard windows can be broken through in under a minute. Security film changes that.

Daniels Window Coverings installs security film on residential windows across the GTA using professional-grade products from 3M, Llumar, Solar Gard, and other industry-leading manufacturers. We assess every window during your free in-home consultation and recommend the right film thickness based on your property's risk profile.

  • Ground floor windows and glass doors — highest priority
  • Patio and sliding glass doors — common forced entry point
  • Sidelights and windows adjacent to front/rear entry doors
  • Basement windows — secondary entry risk, easy to overlook
  • Frame anchoring available — bonds film to frame for maximum hold
  • Optional UV + security combo film — protection + comfort in one layer

Storefront Glass Protection

Smash-and-grab incidents at Toronto storefronts have been increasing. Retail glass doors, large shopfront windows, and ATM glass are frequent targets. Security film adds a critical protective layer to your storefront glass — helping hold it together on impact and dramatically slowing any forced entry attempt.

For most smash-and-grab attempts, a breach needs to happen fast to avoid detection. Security film on storefront glass increases the time and noise required — and in most cases, the attacker moves on rather than continue trying to break through.

  • Retail storefront windows and glass doors
  • ATM enclosure glass and vestibule windows
  • Pharmacy and jewellery retail — high-value smash-and-grab targets
  • Restaurant and café glass fronts
  • After-hours retail security — first line of passive defence
  • Insurance documentation provided for insurer inquiry

Honest note: Storefront security film helps delay entry and helps hold glass together during a smash-and-grab attempt. It is not a guaranteed deterrent and does not replace alarm systems, security cameras, or physical reinforcement — but it adds a meaningful protective layer as part of a layered security strategy.

Why Smash-and-Grab Attacks Choose Glass

Smash-and-grab attacks rely on speed. The faster an intruder can breach a window or glass door, the less time they're exposed. Standard glass shatters on the first or second impact — giving instant access. Security film changes this calculation entirely.

With security film installed, glass may crack and web on impact — but it stays in the frame. The intruder must keep hitting the same spot, creating noise, taking time, and drawing attention. Most abandon the attempt within seconds of finding the glass won't give way.

Security Film FAQ

Thickness is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). 4 mil safety film mainly holds glass together to reduce injury. 7–8 mil security film is the most popular residential and commercial grade and meaningfully delays forced entry. 12–14 mil heavy-duty film is for storefronts and high-risk properties — strongest when paired with a frame-anchoring system. Most GTA homes are well served by 8 mil; smash-and-grab targets should consider 12–14 mil.

Match the grade to the risk. Homes are best served by 8 mil security film (4 mil if injury prevention alone is the goal). Retail storefronts and smash-and-grab targets should use 12–14 mil with a frame-anchoring system. Schools and public buildings typically specify 8–12 mil for classroom and entrance glass. Blast mitigation calls for 14 mil daylight-installed with frame anchoring, engineered against GSA blast-hazard levels. Try the "Which mil thickness do I need?" tool above for an instant plain-language recommendation.

No film blocks a full 100%, but professional-grade film blocks up to 99% (99%+) of UVA and UVB rays. That protects furniture, flooring, and artwork from fading and reduces harmful UV exposure. Many of our UV-rejecting films carry the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation.

Professional security and safety films are tested to ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201 (Categories I & II) for safety glazing, and EN 12600 for impact classification. Many are also SGCC-certified and carry the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal for UV protection. We match the film and standard to your application.

Safety film (typically 4 mil) mainly holds shattered glass together to reduce injury from breakage, accidents, or storms. Security film (8–14 mil, often with frame anchoring) is thicker and engineered to delay forced entry and resist smash-and-grab. All security film adds safety benefits, but not all safety film provides forced-entry protection.

No. Security film does not make glass unbreakable or bulletproof. It is designed to help hold glass together after impact, delay forced entry, and reduce injury from flying shards. Glass will still crack and fracture — but the film keeps it contained in the frame.

Tempered glass is heat-treated to break into small, blunt pieces for safety, but once it breaks it leaves a wide-open hole — it does nothing to delay entry. Security window film (8–14 mil, with optional frame anchoring) instead holds the broken glass together in the frame, so even a shattered pane stays as a barrier and forced entry is delayed from seconds to minutes. Film is also a fraction of the cost of replacing glass and installs on your existing windows in a single day. For most homes and storefronts, security film delivers the forced-entry protection tempered glass alone can't.

Most residential installations in Toronto and the GTA are completed in a single day. A typical ground-floor security film installation of 8–12 windows takes 3–5 hours. We leave no mess, no residue, and no disruption to your home.

Clear security film is virtually invisible once installed. It has a slight optical clarity similar to a standard window and is essentially undetectable unless you're looking closely. We show you physical samples before installation so you know exactly what to expect.
